✊🏾 Mystic Revealers: A Reggae Legacy Rooted in Truth, Upliftment & the Power of JAH
In a soul-stirring interview on the Reggae Hour Podcast, host Mr. E sat down with none other than Billy Mystic, frontman of the legendary Mystic Revealers, to trace the band’s profound journey through the ever-evolving soundscape of reggae. Formed in Bull Bay, Jamaica in 1977, Mystic Revealers has carried the torch of roots reggae for over four decades—delivering timeless messages of justice, unity, spiritual freedom, and resilience.
“We weren’t trying to replace anyone. We just wanted to sing what we believed—and what we thought could make a difference.” — Billy Mystic
🎶 From Sound Systems to Global Stages
Growing up outside Kingston’s core reggae hubs, Mystic Revealers cut their teeth in Jamaica’s sound system culture. With no major labels knocking, they built their own studio, pressed their own records, and created their own space in reggae’s history.
“It was brave of us as youngsters to say, okay, if no one wants to help us, we’re going to do it ourselves.” — Billy Mystic
The group’s breakout track, “Mash Down Apartheid”, was produced by the iconic Jimmy Cliff and went on to support the African National Congress—a powerful act of musical activism at a time when apartheid still plagued South Africa.
🔥 Carrying the Torch of Message Music
When dancehall swept through Jamaica, Billy and the Revealers doubled down on live instrumentation and lyrical substance. “We couldn’t swim with that current,” Mystic explains. “That was never our vision of what message music should be.”
Instead, they stayed rooted in their mission—to uplift through JAH-inspired reggae. “We’re not just doing music for fun. We’re doing the works of the Most High JAH, Rastafari.”
“Victory is easy… what you have to learn is how to handle defeat, disappointment, and still keep going.” — Billy Mystic
🌊 Surfboards, Fire, and Spiritual Fire
In one of the most compelling parts of the conversation, Billy reflects on the loss of his home to a fire, including priceless archives from the band’s career.
“The real value is not in material things. It’s in the lives we’ve touched, the people we’ve helped, and the message we’ve delivered.”
As a surfer and founder of the Jamaican Surfing Association, Billy drew deep parallels between the ocean and life: “Surfing teaches humility and readiness. Just like waves, opportunities come—and you have to be ready to catch them.”
💨 The Ganja Movement and New Generations
Mystic Revealers are also trailblazers in Jamaica’s herbal healing movement, launching the Jamaica Authentic Herb Company and offering holistic ganja-based remedies for the community.
“The plant was once for meditation. Now it’s often used just for recreation. That shift in purpose disappoints me, but we still use it to help those in need.”
Meanwhile, his sons and children have helped birth a new generation of music, recorded from “Pon Di Verandah” Studio and channeled into the album “Jah Jah People”.
