Don Dada: A Pan-African Voice, Multi-Platinum Artist, and History-Maker

Why Menelik Nesta Gibbons Is a Living Legacy in Music, Culture, and Community

When we talk about leaders whose work transcends entertainment and becomes a cultural force — few names resonate as deeply as Menelik Nesta Gibbons, better known to the world as Don Dada. A multi-platinum, multi-award-winning artist and cultural architect, Don Dada has built a career that bridges continents, genres, and generations.

Born in Harare, Zimbabwe and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, Don Dada started his artistic journey in 2000 and founded Ruff Cutt Studio in 2009 — a creative hub that has become a breeding ground for reggae, hip-hop, and African consciousness.

From his early album Avant-Garde to chart-topping releases like VIVA Mandela, Don Dada has consistently pushed beyond the conventional boundaries of music. His work has not only garnered multi-platinum sales in record time but has also been recognized for its social and historical significance.

🎶 Cross-Genre Innovation & International Recognition

Don Dada fuses reggae, hip-hop, and African soundscapes into a cohesive voice that speaks to the heart of the African experience. His album The Heart & The Mind — a double LP with one disc paying homage to reggae’s heart and the other exploring hip-hop’s intellect — demonstrates his commitment to storytelling through both rhythm and reason.

He has broken barriers as an artist:

  • First artist from Southern Africa to premiere a music video on Tuff Gong International’s official platform

  • First African to perform on the prestigious Bob Marley Tribute Stage in Jamaica

  • Multi-platinum anthem VIVA Mandela — commissioned by MTN & Content Connect Africa — achieved Gold, Platinum, and Multi-Platinum status in record time

  • His music has been hailed by major broadcasters like the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) as an important part of Black history

In recognition of his influence, Don Dada has also been acknowledged with multiple awards across African and international platforms, including Best Reggae Dancehall Artist (AEAUSA) and Best Male Artist in Southern Africa (AFRIMA), along with various other accolades celebrating his impact and artistic excellence.

🎙️ Industry Leadership & Global Influence

Don Dada’s influence is not confined to performance and production; he is a voting member of the Recording Academy®, the organization behind the GRAMMY Awards®, where he contributes to shaping contemporary music’s most prestigious recognitions.

This position places him among music’s leading voices, representing Africa’s artistic contributions on the global stage and ensuring that narratives from the continent are considered alongside those from around the world.

Beyond music, Don Dada is an entrepreneur, broadcaster, radio personality, and social advocate. He has worked with community organizations — engaging with youth, supporting educational initiatives, and championing inclusion and opportunity across social and cultural platforms.

🏆 The Reggae Hour Annual Black Person of Black History Month Honor

It is within this context of cultural impact, activism, and visionary leadership that Reggae Hour is proud to present Don Dada with our Annual Black Person of Black History Month Honor — the very first such award ever bestowed on a Black male.

📜 What This Honor Stands For

This honor is one of recognition without exploitation — not for fame, visibility, or social media reach — but for meaningful, transformative action rooted in values that have sustained liberation movements throughout history:

  • Love

  • Truth

  • Peace

  • Justice

  • Freedom

Designed to uplift contributors whose work is actively shaping history in real time, this honor acknowledges individuals whose contributions are deeply rooted in service to the African diaspora and whose impact continues to reverberate across cultural, educational, political, and spiritual spheres.

🦁 The Medallion — Symbolism and Meaning

The official Reggae Hour Honoree Medallion is a two-sided ceremonial emblem infused with profound African and Rastafarian symbolism. At its center lies the Adinkra symbol Okodee Mmowere, representing strength, bravery, and moral uprightness — qualities embodied by each honoree. Behind this core symbol stands the roaring lion, a traditional Rastafarian emblem of courage, protection, and sovereignty.

The medallion’s colors reflect the shared experience of the African diaspora:

  • Red: the blood, sacrifice, and shared struggle

  • Black: unity, identity, and collective strength

  • Gold: honor, wisdom, and ancestral wealth

  • Green: growth, renewal, and future promise

The inscription on the front reads “Reggae Hour Honoree”, affirming communal recognition and cultural legitimacy, while the reverse bears the name of the honoree — in this case, Menelik Nesta Gibbons aka Don Dada — marking a personal record of accountability and place in history.

🕊️ This Honor Is a Call Forward

This recognition marks history in the making — affirming that the work being done today is part of a living archive, continuously contributing to the cultural, intellectual, and political evolution of the African diaspora. It is not an endpoint, but a call to build, act, and continue the journey toward unity, empowerment, and collective advancement.

✊🏾 Honored and Moving Forward

As we celebrate Don Dada’s accomplishments — from multi-platinum hits and global stages to cultural leadership and community advocacy — we affirm that Black history is alive, continuously written by those whose actions shape the present and future.

Menelik Nesta Gibbons aka Don Dada is not just an artist.
He is a leader, educator, bridge-builder, and catalyst for change.

And now, he stands as the first male recipient of this historic honor — a milestone that signals not only achievement, but responsibility, legacy, and aspiration.

Forward… we continue.
